Net worth is not a budget (stop mixing them up)

A budget watches the month. Net worth watches the pile.

Mixing them up is how people feel broke after a good payday, or rich after ignoring the mortgage. They answer different questions.

What each one is for

**Budget:** where did this month's money go? Rent, groceries, subscriptions, the long lunch you swore you would skip. It is flow.

**Net worth:** what do you own minus what you owe, right now? Offset, super, shares, house estimate, cards, HECS, the lot. It is stock.

You can nail a budget and still go nowhere if debt is flat and assets are ignored. You can grow net worth and still blow the month if cash timing is a mess. Both can be true.

Why the mix-up happens

Apps love a single dashboard. Spend rings, "fire" scores, and green checkmarks blur cashflow with wealth. Then a big HECS balance or a house estimate lands in the same emotional bucket as this week's Uber Eats.

That is a category error. Your card statement is not your life score. Your net worth is not permission to spend more this Friday.

A simple split that works

  1. Keep a budget (or a rough spending check) for the next few weeks of cash.
  2. Keep a net worth ledger for the slow truth: assets and debts.
  3. Visit the ledger on a cadence, not every time you feel guilty about a purchase.
  4. Let big money moves show up in both places when they should: an extra loan payment hits the budget this month and the debt line forever.

If a tool tries to be both and makes you hate opening it, split the jobs. Clarity beats a clever chart.

What net worth will not tell you

It will not tell you if you can afford dinner. It will not fix a partner money fight by itself. It will not replace an emergency fund you never funded.

It will tell you whether the gap between assets and debts is moving the right way over months. That is enough of a job.

Soft next step

If you want a private net-worth ledger that stays out of your daily spend drama and never asks for a bank password, try Folio at myfirstmillion.app. You type the accounts in. It graphs the pile when you show up.
