Does HECS count in your net worth?

Short answer: yes, if you want an honest number.

HECS-HELP is real money you owe the government. It does not show up on your credit score the way a credit card does, and you cannot usually refinance it at the pub. That does not make it imaginary.

Why people leave it out

A few common reasons:

  • "It only comes out of my pay"
  • "I will never repay it at this income"
  • "It is not like a mortgage"
  • "Including it makes my net worth look depressing"

Those feelings are understandable. They are also a good way to lie to yourself with a spreadsheet.

If your salary is being reduced every fortnight to service HECS, that debt is shaping your cashflow. Ignoring it in net worth is like ignoring the mortgage because the bank takes it automatically.

How to count it cleanly

Treat HECS like any other debt line:

  1. Look up your current balance (myGov / ATO).
  2. Put it in your ledger as a debt.
  3. Update it when the balance changes (indexation, repayments, extra voluntary hits).

You do not need daily updates. After indexation and after tax time is enough for most people.

Assets side: do not invent offsets

HECS is not secured against your house. You cannot "pay it down with equity" in a tidy spreadsheet trick. Just list the balance you owe.

If you have an offset or extra cash you plan to throw at HECS, that cash is still an asset until you actually pay. Do not double-count.

Indexation is the quiet killer

HECS can grow when indexation hits, even if you made compulsory repayments all year. That is why a static "I think I owe about 30k" note from two years ago is useless.

When you track the real balance, indexation shows up as a debt increase. Ugly, but useful. You can decide whether voluntary repayments are worth it for your situation. This is not tax advice. It is a tracking habit.

What a healthier picture looks like

A useful Aussie net worth view often looks like:

  • Cash + offset
  • Investments
  • Property (estimated)
  • Minus mortgage
  • Minus HECS
  • Minus cards and other loans

That total might be lower than the Instagram version. It is also the number that matches your life.
